The Search for Happiness

The Search for Happiness

On the surface, happiness is a seemingly simple concept, but it is incredibly difficult to quantify. How can we measure something so abstract that varies so much from person to person? Do we measure it by the number of zeros at the end of a bank account or the number of cupcakes in the fridge? As it seems, a statistician named Nic Marks thinks he’s found the perfect method to quantify how happy we truly are.

In 2012, Nic Marks, the founder of The Centre for Well-Being in London, created an equation to calculate what he calls the Happy Planet Index (HPI) by multiplying a country’s “experienced well-being” by their life expectancy and dividing it by their overall ecological footprint. After performing this calculation for 151 countries all over the world over the last few years, Costa Rica continues to hold the number one spot on the list, significantly higher than the United States’ rank of 105. Find out more about the HPI by watching this video.

At the forefront of eco-tourism and sustainability, Costa Rica is a perfect place for green vacationing and getting in touch with the environment. At Safari Surf, we offer a variety of opportunities to help you explore the rich expanses of wildlife Costa Rica has to offer.

No surprise there. Costa Rica is a beautiful country with open arms to those who want to visit and stay. It is motivated by peace which makes it attractive to anyone else who shares this value as did Quakers back in the 1970s I believe.
